General & Preventive Dentistry in New England
At Admire Dental, we do our utmost to help patients keep their whole, healthy smile for life. In the past, patients only visited the dentist if they experienced toothache, decay, or damage, but in keeping with the American Dental Association recommendations, we encourage patients to visit our office two times each year to prevent common oral health issues. Contact our team to schedule a dental checkup for you and your family. We offer evening and weekend appointments to fit into even the busiest schedules.
Checkups & Cleanings
While we take time to get to know patients personally in order to create a custom treatment plan, each patient receives a solid foundation in preventive dental care. In addition to thorough at-home hygiene, twice a year dental checkups and teeth cleanings are the best way to keep patients’ smiles healthy. Each six month dental checkup at our office begins with the collection of diagnostic x-rays and photographs that will be used to review oral health concerns and plan for ongoing dental care. Next, one of our skilled dentists will carefully examine patients’ smiles looking for signs of common oral health concerns including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. One of our hygienists systematically cleans plaque and tartar buildup from teeth, and offers recommendations for changes in at-home hygiene to improve oral health. Finally, each patient sits down one on one with the doctor to review the findings of their examination and partner to create a plan for ongoing oral health care.
Sealants are an efficient and effective way to prevent tooth decay, protecting teeth from plaque and tartar buildup and keeping smiles whole and healthy. Many cavities occur because bacteria accumulates in the tiny grooves and crevices of teeth. Unable to remove this bacteria with even a single toothbrush bristle, plaque accumulates in these minute pits and fissures. Sealants fill these gaps with a clear, protective coat that prevents bacteria and plaque from weakening tooth enamel causing decay.
Nightguards for Bruxism
Unconscious teeth grinding and clenching, known as bruxism, may have a number of causes. Most patients experience teeth grinding while they sleep making it a difficult habit to break. Our skilled team offers a simple, effective solution – nightguards. These custom crafted oral appliances offer a two-fold treatment. First, they shift the jaw into its ideal alignment limiting the shifting of the jaw to achieve a more comfortable position, and then, mouthguards place a physical barrier between teeth to prevent wear from teeth grinding and clenching.
Patients who participate in any athletic activities where their smiles may come in contact with other players, sports equipment, or hard surfaces should always wear a mouthguard to protect their teeth from harm. Store bought varieties are available, but patients often find that these mouthguards are uncomfortable, making them less likely to use the guards consistently. We offer custom crafted sportsguards that fit comfortably over patients’ teeth and are crafted from the highest quality materials, providing optimal protection.
Periodontal (gum) disease is an oral health issue that effects those tissues that are around (perio) the teeth (odont). Periodontal therapy from Admire Dental typically begins with more frequent professional teeth cleanings, but as the condition advances, we may recommend additional treatments including scaling and root planing. Scaling is the careful removal of plaque, tartar, and damaged tissue around the gum line. Root planing is a treatment that smooths the root structures to prevent future plaque and tartar buildup and reduce the risk for reinfection.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer claims the life of one patient in the US every hour on average, and of those diagnosed this year, only about 50% will live five years beyond diagnosis. According to the work of researchers at the Oral Cancer Foundation, the best way to improve these statistics is to diagnose oral cancer in earlier stages. That’s why we include fast, effective screenings for oral cancer as an integral part of checkups at Admire Dental.
A topical fluoride treatment is just one of the many general dentistry services we offer to strengthen teeth. As dental structures develop, patients need to ingest fluoride in order to form strong, healthy teeth, but once teeth have emerged, topical fluoride is the only way to continue to fortify tooth enamel to prevent decay and other dental damage. Professional fluoride treatments can be easily applied as part of any six month dental checkup at Admire Dental. We often recommend this service for young patients who are still learning to care for their teeth, but fluoride treatments are beneficial for patients of any age who struggle with frequent tooth decay.
